Lyon Urban Trail March 29, 2026
What is the Lyon Urban Trail?
On March 29, Lyon is transformed into an adventure playground. The Lyon Urban Trail is a race like no other: here, you cross a living, vertical city, sometimes demanding, always spectacular. Endless staircases, cobbled alleyways, secret passages, straightforward climbs and breathtaking panoramas… Each stride tells the story of a piece of the city.
Whether you register for a short or long format in autumn or winter, one thing is certain: the LUT (for those in the know) is prepared differently from a classic 10 km.
A unique route: between heritage and slopes
The route takes in emblematic places: the slopes of the Croix-Rousse, the dizzying staircases linking the quays to the heights, the traboules of Vieux Lyon, the passages in the heart of Vieux Lyon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, places usually closed to the public (e.g. the inside of a school) and the climbs up to Fourvière.
Charm is part of the challenge. There are frequent restarts, the ground changes (cobbles, asphalt, stairs), and the gradient is sometimes surprising. Here, you don’t “set a time” like elsewhere: you live an experience.

Tips for a successful Lyon Urban Trail
1. Work on the gradient beforehand
Include sessions with short, intense staircases or climbs. The Lyonnais course is particularly hard on the quadriceps, especially on the downhill sections.
2. Manage your climbs intelligently
There’s no need to run everything. On long flights of stairs, alternate running and brisk walking to save energy.
3. Choose your shoes carefully
A good compromise between grip and dynamism is essential. Cobblestones can be slippery, especially in wet conditions.
4. Anticipate the logistics
Arrive early, find the access points and plan an extra layer for waiting at the start. Late March mornings in Lyon can be chilly.
5. Recover as soon as you arrive
Hydration, light stretching, active walking: the succession of downhill sections puts a lot of strain on the muscles.

An inspiring weekend of sport
Every year, the Lyon Urban Trail attracts runners from all over France and beyond. Many choose to make a full weekend of it: sport on Saturday or Sunday, discovering the city, sharing time with friends and family.
Running in Lyon also means looking up, crossing neighborhoods steeped in history, feeling the energy of a city that can’t be seen in a single glance. Pssst: for your information, the night race, which takes place in autumn, has been suffering from a rainy curse for some years now… If you’re waterproof, you’re fine!
At Aubergistes Lyonnais, we’re particularly fond of this late-March effervescence: passionate sportsmen and women, routes commented on at the table, tales of heroic climbs to Fourvière. We may not all be running on March 29, but we’re happy to share the enthusiasm.
